The router cannot supply internet without the modem. The computer cannot receive internet without the modem. The modem from your ISP is what supplies your internet, and without it, you cannot have internet, even with a router.
What Squirrel Man said is right on target: the modem is the initial communication device for providing Internet service to the home. It translates the ISP service signal into Ethernet so that your home computer can communicate and vice versa. Think of the modem this way: you and your computer speak English but the big bad world of the Internet speaks some unknown and unidentifiable foreign language. The modem is the interpreter which knows both languages.
As for the router, to make an analogy for it, consider it the "public relations officer" for your internal network. It speaks English and communicates the needs and desires to the modem and carries messages translated by the modem from the Internet back to the machines inside. It obscures the internal network so that neither the modem nor the Internet at large know just how many computers that router represents.
Does this help you understand the purposes of both devices? If not, let me know and I will be glad to answer any additional questions.
The modem if what provides the internet, so yes, you will need the modem, the computer, and the router to have Wi-Fi for an iPod touch.
'No modem present' generally means an error with the connection to the internet. The Modem is the middle component between the router and the internet, it recieves data from a jack that allows internet access, which is passed through the modem to the router so that wireless enabled devices can access internet. A computer can connect directly to the modem in order to gain internet access and a router is optional not compulsory.. Without a modem, you cannot recieve internet access. A modem connects your computer to the Internet. A router takes the Internet signal and splits it up and distributes it to other computers on your network. There are two types of routers, wired and wireless. A wired modem router uses a cat5 cable to connect to the modem and to connect to each computer on the network. A wireless router uses wires to connect to the modem but connects to each computer on the network without wires.
Find a Broadband or DSL internet provider or if you already have one and are already using it connect a router to your modem. Then simple connect an ethernet cable from your modem to your router and one from your router to your PS3. The cable that was going from the modem to your computer now goes from your router to your computer. If you are not using the internet service before then just connect th ethernet cable from your new modem to the PS3. Then if you do get a computer just buy the router and the ethernet cables then.
A broadband router modem is a device used to help connect a computer to the internet. You can buy it from a store or a service provider and connect the Ethernet cable to your computer.
For just regular internet access, you need a computer and an internet modem (from your internet provider). For wireless access, you need a DSL or broadband modem, a computer to set up a router on, and a Wi-Fi router, and the thing you are going to use to connect to the Wi-Fi router to access the internet.
No, they are different devices. A modem is used for computer, let's say a laptop. Whereas, a wireless router can be used for multiple computer connections, through high-speed internet.
Yes you take the internet access from the modem to the computer and move it to the router so the router can allow more access than just to the computer. In the back of the router there are spots for ethernet cables only one is a input and that comes from the modem and should be connected. There should also be 4 or more outputs and one then gets connected to the computer. You will need to buy more ethernet cables. Internet comes from your DSL modem and you need to disconnect your computer to allow the router to be installed. Your computer and anything else is then connected to the router
MAC/PC/printer to router. Router to modem. Modem to wall/internet. Wired or wireless router is optional, same principle.

Computer, or internet capable mobile phone or TV. A modem or router with built in modem. A internet provider. A phone line or wireless Internet provider.
The modem and the computer are separate from each other. The modem is what brings Internet into your house, and then an Ethernet cable brings it to your computer or a router. It is not recommended that you shut off the modem.
