The door latch and rods should already be in place BEFORE mounting the window and lock guts into the door. If the latch is secured correctly, and the rods in the proper position, connecting them to the door guts is common sense business.

Very simple to fix. Remove the 2 screws in the handle part of the inner panel, remove and unplug the panel with the lock and window buttons, remove trim ring around door latch, remove inner panel. There is one rivet holding the inner door latch into place. Drill out the rivet and slide the latch forward until it comes out (approx. 1") Remove the 2 rods connected to the latch. Now just attach the rods to the new latch and slide the new latch on the same way the old one came out. You do not have to put a rivet in the new latch. Attach all the inner panels. You can pick up a new door latch from a Chevrolet dealer for around $30 - $40 Same thing happened on my 1999 just before the door handle broke all the way. Replace the inside door handle. I shopped on the internet and got a color matching door handle for around $20. When cars start to get this old the unsold parts sitting at the manufacture gets sold cheap to clearing houses.

Assuming you are referring to the outer door handle, remove the inner door panel and look at the back of the handle. You will see a couple of steel rods attached to the handle, remove these(they just unclip)and move them out of your way. You should be able to see a couple of small nuts holding the handle to the door. Remove these and the handle can be pulled out of the door from the outside.

Remove the door panel, check the fastener to the inside handle to make sure it is connected if it is ok then on to checking to see if the door opening handle rod is connected to the latch, most times the plastic or metal retaining clip will break or fall off. If both of these rods are connected firmly, then it may be that the springs inside of your actual door latch are at fault, thus having to replace the latch itself.

Remove the inner door panel. There will be an arm that is or in this case is not attached to the handle. There are two rods: one upper and one lower. Pull the top rod down to unlatch the top catch and pull the lower one up to unlatch the bottom catch. Hope this works.

I would guess that your rear door latch is broken. You can pick up a replacement cheap on E-Bay or an "improved" design from the dealer. To replace the latch you have to be able to access a plastic cover held on by 4 screws located on the door jamb. This is where being unable to open the door presents a problem. On my van I was able to remove the speaker in the rear door (by drilling four small rivets)and reach in and actuate the rod for the latch. With you hand in the door there are two rods that you will be able to feel. One is the door lock and the other is the latch. You have to pull the latch up to release it, with the door unlocked. I have heard that other people have had success by drilling the heads off of the handle. These are the two flat heads visible when you pull the handle open. The handle is aluminum and would drill easy. Once you get the door open it is a two minute job to replace the handle.

Hold the door handle open and rotate the cable around to release the cable end from the handle. Disconnect the plastic retaining clip mounted to the interior of the door. Pull the cable to the bottom of the door.4. Remove the door latch. Roll the window up. Take 3 screws holding the door latch. Warning: once you remove these screws, there's no going back.a. Drop the latch down a little. You can see through the access hole 2 rods. The rod for the interior lock has a threaded end. The rod is attached to the latch using a yellow plastic clip. The plastic clip has a retaining arm keeping the rod from sliding off. You can rotate the entire door latch to get a better look at it.b. With your hand pry the plastic piece keeping the rod attached to the latch. You have to pry the latch and work the rod off the plastic retaining fixture.c. Remove the second rod which attaches to the outside door handle. This removes the same way the first rod did.d. There is a 3rd rod which attaches to the exterior door lock. To remove this, put your key in the exterior lock and rotate the lock clockwise. This will allow you to see enough of the lock to remove it like the first 2 rods.e. Once you have all rods disconnected from the latch you can extract the latch from the door by rotating the latch around the window channel guide, or dropping the latch down past the window channel guide.5. With the door latch out of the door, pry the cable out from the latch body with plyers.To re-install reverse the process, just like car manuals say.- Helpful hints reassembling.1. Connect rods in this order: Outside door lock, Outside door handle, inside door lock.2. Leave the door latch loose while you are attaching the outside door lock rod. This will allow you some visual clues aligning the rod with the door lock. Also, put your key in the lock and rotate the lock clockwise to see the plastic rod clip.There was a recall of the door handle cable by NTSHA. you must check the inside latch to lock rods there arre two. one may be broken or bent out of shape you must take of door panel and take oout the 2 rods that are attached to your innner door handle. I did this to my 89 wrangler but im not sure if it is the same if you have power doors.
