Yes. For example you can install IE7, Firefox, and Opera all on the same computer. Each added browser will beg you to make it the default browser, but you can tell them to stop asking. The default browser is the one that launches when you click a link in some other program, like your email client.

Yes, you can install (and use, if you so wish) multiple browsers at the same time.
Using multiple browsers at the same time can allow you to have separate accounts for the same website (unless the website has banned this). This can be useful for managing your own website or forums.

You can make the default browser switch back and forth each time you launch another browser by setting the second browser as the default. You will need to change these each time.

So to answer your question, yes you can easily have chrome and IE at the same time, the only thing is, the non-default browsers, will come up will all these prompts saying Make ME the default browser :). It's really annoying, but it only comes up when you first open the browser.
More than one Internet Browser can be used & it doesn't have any problem on the system unless any bugs are there in Browser application.
