2 completely different models... Hx is non-vtec, manual windows, doors, cheaper model basically... And it's not "97 civic v-tec" its a 97 ex model... Vtec is the engine (ex) is the model of the car, like civic vx, lx, cx, hx, ex... Ex has sunroof and power everything...

1.6L sohc, if it's an EX, it will be Vtec with 127HP and if HX, vtec-e with 116HP, and any other sub model will be a non-vtec with 106HP

basically engine.... in the Ex they come stock with a 1.6 vtec, and Hx is a 1.6 sohc v-tec-e, enabling them to get great fuel economy (41 hwy and 31 city) whereas the Ex will get good fuel economy (32 hwy and 28 city) however, to do this, the Hx sacrifices some power (116 Hp vs the Ex's 127)... The Ex also comes standard with power windows, power locks, moonroof, keyless entry, and A/C where on other sub-models, such as the Dx and Lx, these are only options (that info is specifically from the 96-00 civics, may vary from generation to generation of the Civic)

The easiest way to tell if your engine has VTEC is to either read off the engine code (this is located on a flat angled panel on the front passenger side of the engine block to the passenger side of the exhaust manifold) and Google it... OR ...look to the far upper passenger side corner of the valve cover. Look for a cylinder about two inches tall or so. It's probably a bronze color and sits upright like a can of soda. That is the VTEC solenoid. If you don't see it, you don't have VTEC on that engine.

he's a better driver. plain and simple, sorry to burst your bubble. is you engine originally like that or did you put in the vtec motor (im assuming D16Z6 SOHC vtec) and used the regular tranny that was already in the car. if you swapped the motor in and used your CX, VX, or DX tranny, the gearing in the tranny is different and could cause you to be slower.

size, EX is 1.6 sohc v-tec, HX is a 1.5 sohc (from 92-95) and they are both 1.6l engines from 96-00, the difference being the v-tec (Ex) and v-tec-e (Hx) the Ex builds 127 hp, and gets 28 mpg city and 32 hwy, but with the v-tec-e of the Hx, it gets 31 city and 41 hwy mpg, but only builds 116 hp... the blocks MAY interchange in the 96-00 civics, but will NOT interchange in the 92-95 civics
