I had this problem and it turned out to be a dirty park switch located in the console shift (automatic), that releases the ignition in park. The mech cleaned it and the problem never returned.
It is true that a vehicle with an automatic transmission can start in either park or neutral.
The " park " position is not a drive gear , you select the " park " position when you don't want the vehicle to move , and it also allows you to remove the ignition key
ignition will be turned off and keys left in ignition, transmission placed in park (automatic) or reverse (manual), parking brake set, parking lights/emergency flashers on
Parallel parking in a manual vehicle can be hard of so,e people. It can take long to park then doing it in a automatic vehicle.
Most programmable features on modern vehicles are changed through a simple button dance, this is no exception. The procedure may vary depending on the model year. Automatic Door Locks With the vehicles engine off, and the ignition in the Lock position, press and hold the power door lock button for approximately three seconds until the DIC displays the current door lock mode. Then press and hold the reset stem for approximately two seconds to switch modes. The following are the mode choices: Lock 1 (default) Lock all doors when the vehicle is shifted out of PARK(P) with an automatic transmission, or when the vehicle speed is greater than 15 MPH (24 hm/h) with a manual transmission. Doors will unlock when the vehicle is shifted into PARK(P) with an automatic transmission, or when the ignition key is removed on a manual transmission. Lock 2 Turns off the automatic door locks Lock 3 Lock all doors when the vehicle is shifted out of PARK(P) with an automatic transmission, or when the speed is greater than 15 MPH(24km/hr) with a manual transmission. Drivers door will unlock when the vehicle is shifted into PARK(P) with an automatic transmission, or when the ignition key is removed on a manual transmission. Lock 4 Lock all doors when the vehicle is shifted out of PARK(P) with an automatic transmission, or when the vehicle speed is greater than 15 MPH (24 km/hr) with a manual transmission. No doors will unlock
To prevent the engine from being started while the transmission is any gear other than park or neutral.
This happened to me. I took it to the dealer and they said they didnt know why it was stuck and they couldn't remove the key either. They suggested pulling out the steering column to remove the key. I declined due to time and potential cost...I could live with it for a bit. One of my employees was married to a guy who worked for a locksmith so I figured I'd check with him to see if he had any suggestions. He came and picked up my Passport and was back in less than 30 minutes, problem solved. He said there is a cable that runs from the gearshift (Automatic Trans) to the column or locking mechanism (it's been a few years and I don't recall exactly) that indicates the vehicle is in park and that cable was loose. If your vehicle isn't in park (or doesn't know its in park!) you can't remove the key. He tightened it up and viola. Check with a locksmith.
the ignition barral will relese the key when the car is in park
Is it when the ignition lights on the brake lights are stuck on? If so adjust the brake light switch at the pedal.hope this helps Answer: Its the park lights. The vehicle is probably in park.
