This is a great do-it-yourself project - especially for those wanting to start doing some of their own car repairs.
Note: there are 2 different engines in this generation of Taurus/Sable. The thermostat on the standard engine, 12 valve "Vulcan" is right up top and pretty easy to get at.
The other engine, 24 valve Duratec / DOHC (you'll see a DOHC badge on the fender if that's the engine) has the thermostat down at the bottom, and will be more complicated process - including a full draining of the cooling system.

You might want to be a bit careful if you have the 3.0 engine as the thermostat bolts are long and small in diameter. They can break off ...i had it happen twice in the last 2 months. The bolt will break right at the bottom of the thermostat housing and you will need to drill out the broken bolt. (use heat and an easyout) The lower bolt is the one that breaks off. Best of luck.

the thermostat is located under the car in the front on the passanger side. look there and you will see the radiator hose leading to it.

I am not completely familiar with the Taurus, but if you follow the top radiator hose (thick one) back to the engine block, the housing should be located at the point where this hose meets the block. The thermostat is located here inside the Thermostat Housing.
