It fires .22 Long Rifle bullets, and leaves behind shell casings when you eject them from the cylinder after firing.
BAR stands for Browning Automatic Rifle, not browning association rifle.
With a flat screwdriver , their are 4 positions, eject straight out the rear , to the left or to the right, and a stop or catch position.

I have had one since 1957 and am a left handed shooter, I feel it is a excellent rifle for a left hander due to the bottom eject, there are no doubt less expensive rifle available but you will not get hit in the face.
You may have a broken extractor.broken ejector of both on your rifle.I would surely take your rifle to a qualified gunsmith to identify and fix the problem.
