The NV3550 uses Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant. You can also use Royal Purple Syncromax fluid, this is what I filled mine with and it shifts worlds better than what it used to. The 42RLE uses ATF+4 fluid, nothing else. If you use anything else, it will burn up.

Without any mods, NO you need a stand alone computer to run 42RLE. Powertrain control solutions will build you one. You need the original wires from the tranny to the fire wall . Send the wires to them and they will marry it to their computer. I want to do the same thing. I would buy a tranny and Tcase as a unit out of a wreck then the splines will be correct. NO this is not normal. Your Jeep is equipped with the 42RLE 4-speed automatic transmission. Usually, when you 'put the pedal to the metal', depending on what speed you are traveling at, the transmission should kick down one or two gears. If it is dropping into neutral on its own, I would say check the fluid level. The specified fluid change interval for the '03 automatic transmission is every 30,000 miles. I also have to say that the Chrysler transmissions are extremely sensitive to the type of fluid used in them. ATF+4 is the ONLY fluid that should be used, nothing else. This is also known as "Type 7176 fluid". Make absolutely sure that yourself or any shop that services it puts that fluid in, otherwise your transmission will NOT like it. In addition, the 42RLE is controlled by a computer. The dealer can scan the computer for clutch volume indexes and any trouble codes stored or present. If you are within the 7-year/70,000mile powertrain warranty, they should do it for free. If they do not, take it to another dealer. Do not let them try and bend you over with diagnostic fees and that crap. Hope that helps you. Good luck with it.

It was designed for Jeeps but was used later in Dodge trucks; its first use was in the 1999 Grand Cherokee V8. The transmission features a tall, 3.00:1 first gear that gives the driver better initial acceleration. Real-time driver adaptive shifting fine-tunes the shift pattern to the driver, while an alternate second gear ratio gives the driver five forward ratios.During acceleration, second gear has a ratio of 1.67. Depending on speed and throttle position, both this gear and an alternate 1.50 second gear ratio are available for kick-down operation, making the down-shift smoother. Its reverse gear ratio is equal to the first gear ratio, to allow for heavier loads.
