The short answer is yes. Its even been done a few times. Money and time are a huge factor though. You would be better of getting a motor from a 96 pathfinder(VG33E) which bolts in. Slapping a turbo on it and calling it a day.
If it's a Z31 you can swap in the VG30DET. For the Z32 you can swap in the VG30DETT, or what some people do Rb26dett (skyline engine). The former is a easy swap the latter hard. I've even seen a SR20 (silvia), 2 liter all aluminum in a Z32. Car's pretty heavy for 4 cyl torque, but needless to say the sr wasn't stock. I'd do the VG30DETT easy, pretty cheap, and awesome.
turbo front cross member and turbo engine mount
300zx from 84 - 88 are z31
the best way to go would be a twin turbo swap. the na motor has high compression so even if you figure out the hardships and manufacturing of a turbo kit for the na, you would only be able to run about 4-5 psi of boost which when balanced out with time and money. its not practical.
You would be better off just replacing the engine with the turbo version from a Z31 or even the DOHC twin turbo version from the Z32. The reason for this is the large differences between the turbo and non-turbo that go way beyond just a turbo. The compression ratio is higher in the non-turbo to make up for the lack of boost. Adding a turbo to that compression ratio will cause detonation. Bottom line, just the cost of a turbo system, ecu, and changing the compression ratio (just the basic changes you need) will still cost far more than just replacing the engine.
A Z31 turbo with the boost on about 11-12 psi and intercooled will make around 250-275whp, which is about 75-100 more whp then a z32 na makes at the wheels. Z32 NA makes 220hp stock while a Z31 Turbo makes 200hp stock.
although possible, it is not recommended. The actual cast engine block is the same however, the intake manifold and exhaust manifolds are to wide to fit into the z31 engine bay. So it is possible but would take a good amount of custom fabrication. I'd recommend an sr20 or rb series motor swap. considerably less modification
Answer Because of differences in the vacuum characteristics of a turbo and non-turbo 300ZX the turbo models (Z31 seriers anyway) have a vacuum pump added under the front bumper that comes on when sufficient vacuum is not available from the engine for only the following....water solenoid for heater, ac/heater controls, cruise control.
Pretty sure its the clips to hold the inflatable donut tire's aircan.
You might have a problem with the orientation but it will work. Here's a list of engines seen in a z31, http://www.az-zbum.com/modification.engine.swap.shtml
with considerable time, maybe? the only thing they kept the same from the z31 to the z32 was just the VG30 short block the engine was changed to a DOHC engine making it considerably wider, I have owned an 86 turbo and I currently have a '90 N/A. I wouldn't dare try fitting the VG30DE into the z31.
Nistune. Romulator are two of them you can use to reprogram a z31 ecu.
