Can you? Of course you can. The question is, should you. If Honda, who spent millions designing and building the engine, recommends SAE 5w20 what good reason would you have for assume they do not know what they are talking about and you know better. The answer to your question is NO! Use exactly what Honda recommends and nothing else otherwise you may wish you had down the road when you have serious engine wear.
Not sure if anyone should or can, but 1998-1999 honda recommend 5w-30, but since 5w-20 exist and it is thinner & increase MPG, so honda recommend 5w-20 starting from 2000. In accord, it still has the same 2.3L or 3.0L from 1998-2002, if anyone say 5w-30 will break the engine, then why recommend 5w-30 for 2yr and 5w-20 after 2000 for the same engine.
NO, stick with 5w20 or 5w30 if the mileage is over 100,000.
