Why sand filter is batter than cartridge filter?
Less maintainance with sand you just backwash, and change sand every four years. Cartridge filters clog and have to be taken out and cleaned often. Use sand it is hands down a better system.
Can you use flock with a cartridge filter?
When you use flock you should not put it through the filter.When vacuming flock out of a pool with a sand filter you vacuum to waste. However you don't have that luxury with a cartridge filter. The ideal solution would be to put a 3 way valve between the pump and the filter and set it up so that one of the ports can be run to waste while at the same time shutting of the water to the filter.

If you have a sand filter as your filter you may need to remove some of the sand from time to time, But most will be dunped during backwashing. If you have a cartridge filter you may have to clean it more often. If you use D.E. the sand will be dunped when you backwash,Other then that there is no harm. A: Why would you want to be tracking sand into your clean pool? You are just adding more contaminants. YUK !

One way would be that the water never really gets crystal clear. A good rule of thumb is change sand every 5 years. Of course use the correct grade of sand and use the filter manufacturers recommendations for the correct amount. Ken

Overall a Cartridge filter seems like a good choice for several reasons: 1. They are much smaller 2. They tend to pick up finer dirt 3. They are manually cleaned, so no pool water is used (sand filters are backwashed. This uses lots of pool water) However the disadvantages are: 1. For them to work properly again, they must be let dry after cleaning. 2. The Western Australian Health Department says that pool water should be completely replaced every two years. By backwashing a sand filter, you are always replacing the water. I live in Florida and I have a pool business myself, a cartridge filter is better than a sand filter.If a sand filter breaks it is more expensive to repair than a cartridge filter because 9 times out of 10 the top of the sand filter where the pressure guage is will leak and that means replacing that whole part or the whole sand filter.Most cartridge filters are 2 pieces, a top and bottom half with an rubber O ring in the middle. Most of the time you can buy the top half or bottom half separately saving you money on repair cost, and what usually happens is that the O ring is damaged due to the chlorine in the filter and or the weather. Cartridge has much finer filtering ability and doesn't require backwashing, which drains water from the pool. But it does require period cartridge replacement. Sand is much cheaper and less likely to become plugged with dead algae. The media (sand) only needs to be replace roughly every 10 years. For most people sand is the best all around choice.
Why is your cartridge filter blowing debris back into the pool when sweeping?
The spider gasket in your valve may be deteriorated. Buy a spider gasket and some silicon grease at your pool store. Remove the screws in the multi-port valve and replace the spider gasket after you thorough cover it wth grease. To keep this from happening again, never add chlorine through your skimmer. How do I convert an intex pool filter model?
Convert it to what is better question! Intex (and their Wal-Mart Sand-N-Sun models) ususally come equipped with Cartridge Filters. Their filters seem to have a life span of a month or two (not the filter but the Cartridges themselves) Their are many replacement filters made with Remay, that will last 1-3 years depending on your pools use. If you want to switch to a Sand (or sand alternative), there's a few choices out there. Sand Filters last 4-7 years before having to replace the sand and the sand alternative (Z-Media or Volcanic Ash) cleans as good as a cartridge filter, but with way less maintenance issues. Intex does have a sand filter choice too, but it is usually a bit too underpowered to clean like I like. See the related link below for an alternative choice.
