Convert it to what is better question! Intex (and their Wal-Mart Sand-N-Sun models) ususally come equipped with Cartridge Filters. Their filters seem to have a life span of a month or two (not the filter but the Cartridges themselves)
Their are many replacement filters made with Remay, that will last 1-3 years depending on your pools use.
If you want to switch to a Sand (or sand alternative), there's a few choices out there. Sand Filters last 4-7 years before having to replace the sand and the sand alternative (Z-Media or Volcanic Ash) cleans as good as a cartridge filter, but with way less maintenance issues.
Intex does have a sand filter choice too, but it is usually a bit too underpowered to clean like I like.
See the related link below for an alternative choice.
intex sand filter is not working on filter only working on recirculate position.....what should we do
To maintain a small Intex pool you will need a filter, pool vacuum, pool test kit, net, and chemicals. Keep the filter running to clean the water, test the water daily. Adjust chemicals for chlorine, and PH. Use the net to scoop out leaves and debris as needed, vacuum the pool as needed as well.

An Intex swimming pool is a pre-made above ground pool company. These pools come in a variety of sizes and depths as well as with or without pumps.

To take care of an easy set Intex pool that is 8 feet by 30 inches, you should run the filter each day. Clean the filter periodically. Check chemical levels each day. Add chlorine and adjust the PH as it is needed. Use a net to scoop out dirt, and leaves. Use a pool vacuum to clean the bottom of the pool when it is needed.
Intex pool brand and summer escape pool brand are both reliable and at a low cost , so either one would do the job.
I use the Intex pool startup kit. It has sanitizer, pool test strips and shock. Add Sanitize which is granular chlorine. If you have a pool brush, brush pool. I actually use a mop. If its really dirty you may have to get inside pool to mop, in which case add Sanitize after. Then run filter for 20 minutes and use test strip to check pH & alkilinity. If not right pH add another dose (booklet in kit says how much per 500 gals of water)and run filter another 20 min. Then add Shock and run filter 4-8hrs. If you don't have a filter, then you probably have to drain, clean with regular liquid bleach & mop then refill.
We just got an intex saltwater system online at walmart for 180 including the tax and shipping.
