Almost all cars made in the last 30 to 40 years will use halogen car bulbs. If you have a vehicle older than this, the chances are you will not be using a standard bulb size that is easily available anyway.

In this case, the easiest option is to replace the bulb holder with ones that will fit into the headlamp housing - you may need to modify the housing and cabling to suit. The other option is a complete replacement headlamp unit, which mat be available as an aftermarket upgrade, especially for more popular classic cars.

Lastly, if standard halogen bulbs are not bright enough, have a look at premium halogen/xenon based filament bulbs like Ring Xenon Max, or upgrade to full HID lighting with an upgrade kit.

HIDs give the brightest Light. They are factory standard on some high end vehicles, and it is possible to convert most others using an HID Conversion Kit Upgraded halogen bulbs give more light than standard headlights, and are direct replacements for the original halogen bulbs. Brands include Osram, Philips and Ring. Standard Halogen bulbs come in different options and if you do not want to install an HID kit, you may want to install some of the upgrade options available. See sources and related links below for more information. LED bulbs do not give of much light. A handful of cars are using them, but they need a lot of LEDs and a big headlight unit to work properly. It is not possible to upgrade a halogen bulb to LED at the moment - you just cannot get enough LEDs is the space.

Compare safety features of modern cars and old cars?

Safety-wise, new cars put old cars to shame. Completely the opposite when talking about style and innovation. Anyways, here are a list of safety mechanisms that are non-existent in older cars (older meaning 1970 and older). Safe Innovations: -Airbags of all types -Three point restraint seatbelts (Invented by Volvo) -Traction control systems -Limit slip differentials -Power brakes -Anti-locking brakes -Halogen and xenon headlight bulbs -Layered windshields -Headlight wipers -Windshield wipers that actually work well -Crumpling impact zones -Box frames and structural roll cages -Fire retardant fabrics. Truly the only advantage that an old car has in a collision is it's sheer weight and pure steel construction. Otherwise, they seem like deathtraps compared to modern cars.

How do you replace the headlight bulbs on a 1998 Chrysler intrepid?

There are two bolts that hold each headlight in. They will be on top of the metal radiator support just to the rear of the top of the headlight. Remove these bolts, will either be a T27 torx socket or 7mm, and you will be able to pull the headlights out and replace the bulbs. The bulbs come out with a 1/4 turn and pull. Check out dodgeintrepid.net for tons of info on these cars.

What type of headlight bulb is brighter?

There are three main types of headlight bulb: Filament HID LED Filament are traditional bulbs, using a metal filament surrounded by halogen or xenon gas. Standard bulbs are normal, but headlight bulbs of up to twice the brightness, such as Osram Night Breaker are also available. HID use an arc of electricity, and are on some high end cars. Available as an upgrade, you need to add a ballast unit and a new bulb, so not a direct replacement. LED is only just becoming mainstream. No upgrade path from standard bulbs, as they need carefully designed fittings and controls to make them bright enough for main headlights, although they are common in sidelights, tail, brake and indicator bulbs.

How do you remove the headlight assembly to replace a bulb?

Modern headlight assemblies are just lenses and are really more part of the body than they were in older cars, to replace most all headlights on modern vehicles look under the hood behing the outer headlight lens and there is a bulb receptacle that inserts into the fixture, now it varies on how to remove it from one manufacturer to the next but that receptacle will either have a locking ring or will simply turn out of the back of the lens and you can pull out and replace the bulb from there. Be careful not to touch the bulb with your fingers to help it last longer, fingerprints or oil will cause the halogen bulbs to burn out quickly.
