I have been doing it for over 70 years and my mother did before that. We have never had anything but good results. Is there a reason not to???

There really is not much difference between Mercurochrome and Merthiolate. Both were used to dress wounds and contained alcohol and mercury. They were taken off the US market in 1998 because it was thought that they were linked to autism in children.

Bio-oil is intended for use on scars or undamaged skin, not on any open wounds.

It is better to use an antibacterial or, even, vaseline for wounds that need to heal. Lidocaine is more to relieve pain of sunburn, etc.
