How many permanent unit awards can you wear?
As many as you've earned. A permanent unit award is one worn by a soldier who was assigned to the unit during the period on the unit award certificate. If you were assigned to the 5000th Artillery Regiment (not a real unit, but it'll work) from 1 January 2001 to 1 January 2004, and the 5000th Artillery Regiment earned the Presidential Unit Citation for its work from 1 March 2002 to 1 July 2002, you can wear the Presidential Unit Citation as long as you're in the Army. Sergeant Smith over there who arrived at the unit on 12 July 2002 can only wear it while he's assigned to the 5000th Artillery. If you'd been in six or seven units that earned unit awards, and you were in them WHEN they did whatever it was they did to earn the awards, you could conceivably wear ten or twelve permanent unit awards. It's not likely, but you could do it.

This may sound confusing- I hope I explain in such a way it can be understood. Unit awards (Presidential Unit Citations, i.e.) are not personal decorations- they are awarded to members of an entire unit on a single date. If you were a member of the unit when it was awarded, you can wear it forever, regardless of where your military career sends you. If you became a member of that unit AFTER the Citation was awarded, you can wear it while you are a member of that unit, but upon transfer, you are no longer authorized to wear it on your uniform.

Can veterans wear the Presidential Unit Citation?
It doesn't work that way. If they serve in a unit which was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation prior to their serving in that unit, they would wear the Presidential Unit Citation with their unit awards only while they are in that unit. If they serve in a unit when it is awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, then they wear that award at all times, regardless of what unit they're in.However, if neither of these is applicable, then it may not be worn, whether the service member is a combat veteran or not.

IF you were a member of that unit when it was awarded the unit citation, you can wear it while assigned to any unit. If the unit citation was awarded during a period when you were not a member of that unit, then you may only wear it while assigned to that unit.

Previous awards for the unit are the Presidential Unit Citation for service with the 9th Armored Division (in Luxembourg, WWII), the Valorous Unit Award for service 6 January to 16 June 1991 (Desert Storm) and the Army Superior Unit Award for service 15 October 1995 to 16 December 1996. Soldiers assigned to 2-3 FA wear all of these while assigned to the Battalion. Only soldiers assigned to the Battlion during the time period during which the award was earned may continue to wear it after reassignment to another unit.
