That can depend on many factors, like your age, your occupation and hobbies, how long did you have CTS before surgery? How severe of a case did you have? Do you have any other conditions like Diabetes etc.? Also can depend on what type of procedure you had, and if work comp was invovled or not an whether or not you have an attorney All these factors have been proven to effect carpal tunnel sugery outcomes. In general recovery can be anywhere to 6 weeks up to several months. I had it done at about age 56 open surgery on both hands at different times, I found that I was using my hands within a week for small things and was just about totally over it within 2 weeks.

The actual damage done by the surgery is generally healed within a couple of weeks. However the body's repairs to the damage that has taken place to the median nerve can run into months and may possibly never return to normal. strength returns to the muscles in the hands and fingers very quickly if they were not weakened to badly.

Symptoms have not improved after a long period of nonsurgical treatment. In general, surgery is not considered until after 3 to 12 months of nonsurgical treatment. But this assumes that you are having ongoing symptoms but no sign of nerve damage. Nerve damage would make surgery more urgent.

If it is only caused by inflammation, it may get better with a reduction in the inflammation. however if the pressure on the nerve is a result of tissue build up then it will have to be operated on to relieve the pressure. The recovery time involved is about 2 weeks but you have to take it easy on the hands for about a month or so.
