Changed the timing belt on your 1987 ford escort wagon now it doesn't want to shift out of 1st gear could this have something to do with the new belt or has the transmission gone out as well?

My guess is either a vaccuume line or an electrical connection has been knocked off. Changing the timing belt should not cause the tranny to die. Go through and look for any possible loose connections. Tranny could be dead, but that would be related to age not timing belt.
