It is a DIY job if you have ever seriously worked on cars and have the proper tools. The alternator is not real easy to get to. I wouldn't recommend it as a driveway job unless you have a significant amount of experience. The 3.8L alternator is easier than the 3.5L however.
Only the Olds Intrigue with the 3.5 L
On the passenger side of the engine, toward the front of the side. Near the alternator.
The voltage regulator is partially built into the alternator and partially controlled by the PCM. It is not available separately through standard retail channels.
If you have some vehicle repair knowledge you can replace them yourself. If not, it is best to have a mechanic look at it.
On the 99 Olds Intrigue, the camshaft sensor is located on the rear of the engine. It is just above the starter.
Have your Alternator tested. Sounds like the entire engine is running off just the battery.
It is under the dashboard against the firewall. You have to remove the blower motor first by folding yourself up into a ball, but it can be done.
The camshaft sensor on the 99 Olds Intrigue is located on the engine block. It is under the starter, which has to be removed to locate the camshaft sensor.
