Charles Dickens was a prolific writer known for his vivid characters, social commentary, and memorable storytelling. He wrote numerous novels, including "Oliver Twist," "David Copperfield," and "A Christmas Carol," which continue to be popular today. Dickens was also a journalist and editor, using his platform to advocate for social reform and highlight the plight of the poor.
He was a writer of fiction. His work is still widely read.
The first time he got a job he was about 12, when his father got thrown into the debtors' prison and he had to earn some money for his family. He stopped going to school and he began to work for a shoe polish factory in London (washing bottles). Later, when things got better, he was hired by a newspaper as a court reporter, as he knew shorthand and he could describe the cases in vivid details. It was when he realised that the cases he heard could supply him with excellent literary material that he wrote his short stories.
Dickens lived during, and helped define, the Victorian Era, the period during which Queen Victoria ruled Great Britain (1837-1901). It was a time of dramatic change, during which Poor Laws, Education Laws and Catholic Laws were passed, altering the social fabric of the country. The Industrial Revolutionwas taking place during this time and railroads were changing the face of the world. In 1838, England abolished slavery. The Great Irish Potato Famine began in September 1845. In 1854, the Crimean War began and in 1857, members of the Bengal Army mutinied in India. The Suez Canal opened in 1859. Dickens himself brought about many social and economic changes through his novels and lectures on topics such as the chancery courts, poverty and prostitution, education, and prison reform.
At the age 12 he had to quit school to go work in a shoe factory for 10 hours a day. But later in time he became a novelist for the rest of his life.
