The new Union General in Chief, Henry Wager Halleck was in office hardly a month and besides the threats the Confederates were posing in the eastern and Western theaters, he now faced a Native American uprising in Minnesota. Basically a new war front had been created when the Sioux Uprising began on August 17, 1862. It would take Union forces until late September of 1862 to end the Sioux rebellion. As it turned out, the Minnesota war was the perfect place to send General John Pope.
