Some religions or religiously affiliated groups may encourage violence, but violence itself is not a religion.

The general religious belief on violence is that it is good and righteous if it serves the interest of the religious and political leaders. They insinuate that it is vicious and barbaric when opposing forces engage in similar activities.

In some cases the religious lore dictates that "thou shall not kill" or it attests to a sacred creed of nonviolence but the creators of religion in their own political image and likeness can skillfully manipulate the Propaganda to satisfy their personal aggrandizement.

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy."

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God."

"He who lives by the sword dies by the sword."

"You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Jesus tells us that violence is wrong. He tells us to love one another. But sometimes, this seems impossible. Sometimes, it seems that violence is the only morally correct approach to a problem. For example, what if one country is attacking another, vowing to kill every inhabitant if they succeed? Shouldn't we fight back to save the inhabitants? Saint Augustine says yes, as long as this other country attacked first and as long as diplomacy was tried but failed. But Jesus gives us a different sort of repsonse to being attacked. "Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you." Killing your enemy is hardly loving him. I disagree with Saint Augustine. Anyway, the Catholic Church adopts Saint Augustine's teaching on violence, as do most Protestants.
