Take over the Mississippi River so as to cut off the South from its territories. They also wanted to blockade all of the Southern seaports so that they couldn't continue to trade with anyone.

The South planned to just keep on fighting until they wore down the North enough to give up.
They also wanted to take over Washington D.C
