That clicking is lack of oil at the top of the cylinders. After a few seconds after oil reaches the top, the clicking should stop. This should really only happen when the car has been sitting, allowing the oil to come to rest. If the clicking persists, your car could just be low on oil or you could have a bent valve. Hope Ive helped you out bit. The above answer is correct. Valve train noise is normal on a car that has sit for a long period of time. but if this is happening every day, then you may have a problem. Start by changing the oil and make sure you are using the correct weight oil. A oil that is too heavy will cause this. Also install a AC/Delco filter. Some filters do not have a check valve and this will allow oil to drain out of the filter, and result in low oil pressure at startup. The AC/Delco is a great filter that has the proper check valve installed. New answer Actually, GM has shortened the piston skirts on the 3.1 and 3.4 liter engines and this has caused a ticking noise in the cylinders from the pistons being very short and tending to wobble a bit when cold and lacking oil. After the engine warms a bit and the oil covers the walls, the noise tends to quieten down...however, if the ticking persists after a few minutes, the pistons likely need to be removed and coated with a polymuir (or whatever they call it). Bent valves are likely NOT the problem, it is pretty common for the 3.1 and 3.4 liter GM engine to have this ticking problem, but it can cause cylinder-wall scorching if it tends to continue for longer than a few minutes. If you check it out, I am sure you will find many, many cases of the ticking in these engines and the cause being the short pistons.

Newer Answer I have a 1998 Grand Prix SE with the 3.1 Liter engine i also had that tapping sound and it was more intermittently like it would do it for the first 5 minutes than stop other times it wouldn't start till 30 minutes after driving it some times wouldn't do it for like 2 days. long story short i talked to my mechanic and he said that the GM 3.1 and 3.8 will get "sticky lifters" he told me to just go to an auto parts store look for a oil additive that will remove "sticky lifters" i forget the company name but it was like $3-4. I poured it and it seemed to have little effect the first day but with in 72 hours after that the problem was gone and never came back now i havent done an oil change since then so im not sure that with new oil with out the additive it will come back or not but any way problem solved for me. i hope my ramble will do some one good:).
