You have a problem. see a mechanic to read the computer codes. You need a code reader to determine what is malfunctioning, and after repair, to clear the code. If the problem is fixed, it still needs to be cleared. Pepboys sells a code reader from 80 - 200 bucks.

Your OBD II code reader won't work on that vehicle.
The check engine light is on because of an emission control problem. In order to shut it off you have to have it hooked up to an OBDII code reader. The code reader will give you a code as to why it is on and can shut it off for you.

If you want to get it scanned, you should go to Autozone, they will code scan for free but will not clear codes. You have to pay someone with a code reader to clear the codes, disconnecting the battery doesn't work either
You need a OBD2 scanner/code reader to get stored codes and to erase them
