The Australians rallied behind their defense of their island or continent. They worked cohesively together doing thousands of tasks, joining up to fight and moving children to safer locations. Division arose when the aristocrasy took time to realize they were not impervious to war or Japanese invaders. Some learned humility and began to work hard for the war efforts. Some did not want to cooperate with officials and were forced to cooperate. It is imperative you understand and cooperation and working together rulled the day. Division on war methods, cooperation, British Rule, and other petty issues were not the order of the day. The Australians did an excellent job fighiting with the allies and overcoming the Germans and Japanese. You must understand the Brits did not outfit Australian and the Asian nations ask they should have because they were too stretched. England or the United Kingdom was fight on many different fronts: Africa, The English Chanel, Norway, Italy and eventually Normandy while also having many places in the Asian nations to support and supply. The United Kingdom did not have enough people or armament to wage war in that many places. So the Australians were short changed. After World War 2 Australia finally had self-rule.
