John Adams disliked Great Britain. This is because he wanted independence and disagreed with some sentiments espoused by Paine's famous pamphlet.

Colonists who opposed Britain and wanted freedom were patriots. Colonists who were loyal to Britain were loyalists or Tories. Most of the colonists wanted or didn't want freedom, so there really was no need to a name.

The patriots wanted Independence from Great Britain because they protested that Great Britain had no right to tax them without the consent of their own colonial assemblies. They called the British policies "Taxation Without Representation." Some colonists refused to buy British Products.
