brief: A router essentially determines which way is the shortest or fastest in a network, and routes packets accordingly. It works at layer 3 of the OSI model, moving packets from one port to another based on L3 addresses - ie. IP addresses, IPX addresses, etc. A bridge connects one point to another in a network permanently. It works at layer 1 and 2 of the OSI model.

Router

A router is similar in a switch in that it forwards packets based on address. But, instead of the MAC address that a switch uses, a router can use the IP address. This allows the network to go across different protocols.

The most common home use for routers is to share a broadband internet connection. The router has a public IP address and that address is shared with the network. When data comes through the router it is forwarded to the correct computer.

This comparison to email gets a little off base. This would be similar to the router being able to receive a packet as email and sending it to the user as a fax.

Routers gives layer 3 connectivity

In simple words bridges can transfer packet in a single LAN and Router can transfer packets in multiple LAN or in WAN

Whats the difference between copy running-config startup-config and Write Memory On a Cisco Switch or Router?

The difference is that the write mem command is being discontinued. It is being replaced by the copy command and is the one you should use on the cisco tests. I still use this command on some routers such as 831, 871, 3002, 2950, 2600 however it appears that as of IOS 12 it will be gone. Hope this helps!
