William the conqueror was the king ofEngland for 21 years 1066-1087. He had many ways of controlling England for example the feudal system, the motte and bailey and terror.

The feudal system was when William the conqueror gave some of his land to the knight or lords and the knight or lords to the peasants to work for them.

William the conqueror had many castles because when the Saxons came to England to invade. The English would run up into the castle and stay there It was always on a very steep hill and people would throw down ladders so the villagers could climb up, then they would pull the ladder up so the Saxons couldn't get there until the main army came and defeated the enemy. For King William to pay for the mercenary army he hired to defend his kingdom; he needed a record of all financial and military resources available to him.

He commissioned a survey of all the land and people in it, including even the farm animals. He wanted to know who owned what, how much it was worth and how much was owed to the King in tax, rents and military service.

William the conqueror used terror to make people listen to him. For example, he got his knight to kill people.

William was cruel man but a good king. He did have many ways to make the people of England listen to him. His is the most famous king.
