There is not a set and predefined time to prepare a turkey. It depends on many things. If the bird is almost frozen, it will be needing more time to cook. If one uses foils around the turkey, it decreases the time of cooking. If it is stuffed, it takes more time to cook. Generally, the time could be from 40 to around 90 minutes.

500 degrees F. first 30 minutes then reduce temp. to 325 degrees F. and roast 20 minutes per pound. Will be 4 and 1/2 hours approx. in total. This is a response to the above recommendation of 4 and 1/2 hours:It says to roast the turkey for 20 minutes per pound, then says 4 and 1/2 hours in total. Wouldn't a 21-pound turkey take 7 hours (21 pounds times 20 minutes equals 420 minutes, which is 7 hours)?
Set oven to 350. Roast breast down for 45 minutes, then turn breast up. Cook until the temperature in the thickest portion of the breast is 150 degrees F and the thigh is 160. After you remove it, let it rest 30-60 minutes and the temp will rise 10 or so degrees. It will probably take around 20 to 30 minutes per pound but that changes with the temperature it was when you start and whether it's trussed and other factors. Checking temperature is much better. Time and oven temperature is very unreliable. A meat thermometer is $10 and well worth it.
