I've been doing residential and commercial contracts jobs for about 30 years now. To get an accurate estimate you would need to provide some specifications about your home. Your goal is to not be able to tell the house was added on to. That being said..I'd say if your allowances are middle of the road you could expects some estimates in the $120 per foot range and higher or lower depending on the specs. And if you were to stay very conservative as my wife and I did building our home, you could spend considerably less. We built a 2 story 2200 sq.ft. side entry steep pitch roof home for around a $165,000 and that was with the lot. The catch is we are outside the city and my brother and I built and covered every aspect of the build except for sheetrock and roofing. So draw up your plans and submit em to your permit office, don't need architect stamp, and get estimates and do it yourself!The inspectors will help you where and when you need it, that's what they get paid to do also.

Considering the answer above, at $120/sq foot, you would spend a little more than $20K for a 12 x 14 room. Of course, if you add a bathroom (which you should for a master bedroom), it will probably double the price since you need to deal with Plumbing and fixtures. Make sure your plans include good, but moderate materials and stick to your plan so that you do not end up way over budget. If this is not your usual work, hiring someone to do the work right is going to be time and money savvy.
