There are a couple reasons that your escort will crank but not start. The first is that the engine is getting no fuel. This could be caused by the fuel pump failing or a block in the line. If you turn your key forward to the click right before it turns over, and the fuel pump is operating, you should be able to hear a faint humming coming from your gas tank or somewhere between the fuel tank and engine. Another reason could be that it is getting no spark. This could be caused by a faulty wire or a faulty ignition coil, ingnition relay, or loose distributor cap. Another reason your car would crank but not start would be no compression. Caused by a leaky gasket or head being cracked.

Engines need fuel, compression and spark to run. You believe you have fuel so check for spark next. A faulty crank sensor could be one reason you have no spark. If you have spark, have a compression test done. The timing chain/belt may have broken if you have no compression.

A 91 Sunbird should be fuel injected and not have a carburetor. It sounds like an ignition problem. No spark. Pull a spark plug wire off and connect a spark tester (between 10 and 20 dollars). Have someone try starting the car and watch the tester to see if it lights. If it does not, then you have a faulty ignition system. It could also be a faulty fuel injector. If the fuel injector leaks, there is too much fuel going into the engine. This can cause a vapor lock in the cylinder(s). Hope this helps.

Assuming it is a 302 or 351W with EFI, it could be,a restricted/damaged catalytic converter, a restriction in the exhaust system, a restricted/dirty fuel filter, a faulty fuel pump, a faulty fuel pressure regulator,

Squirt a little starting fluid into the air filter box and try to start it. If you get a response you may have another faulty fuel pump. You could also do a fuel pressure test. It should have 60 to 66 psi. You could also have a faulty fuel pressure regulator. Most commonly it is the fuel pump. I am assuming the fuel filter has been changed.

faulty injectors, faulty pump, faulty regulator. make sure that fuel really isn't getting into the throttle body (just enough to wet the plates). are the plates dry when turning the engine over? if so, check that fuel pressure is in spec. the pump can be tested for operation by connecting to a 12v dc source, battery or otherwise. other than that, good luck.

Is there gas in it? Fuel tank empty . Fault in the carburetor and fuel injection system . Battery terminals connections loose or corroded , battery discharged ( eng rotates slowly ) . Fuel pump faulty . Excessive moisture on , or damage to ignition components . Worn, faulty or incorrectly gapped spark plugs , Broken ,loose or disconnected wiring in the starting circuit , ignition coil or faulty coil .
