It's caused by several things which are as follows: * Just finished your period & this is left over blood. * Missing of Birth Control pill. * Break through bleeding while on birth control. * UTI (Urinary tract infection). * Yeast infection which has caused slight bleeding due to scratching.

It can also mean that for the your last menses the entire uterine lining failed to make a timely exit. So the lining comes out later. Brown vaginal discharge can also be a symptom of something more serious conditions like:
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
- perimenopause
- menopause
- sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, Chlamydia or vaginal warts.
