I had a similar situation with my 2000 Accord. The brake, battery, and door lights all came on and stayed on. I did a little research online and then called my dealer's service department to verify. There are two possibilities; the alternator or the battery. I could be as simple as needing to clean your battery terminal posts. I popped my hood and found a lovely shade of blue-green coating my connection. I cleaned it off and the lights went out. I probably need a new battery soon, but my lights went off!
why do the back lights stay on when the car is off and the brake release is checked on a 1994 Honda accord

Assuming you have the lights turned off, you are seeing the brake lights. They are more than likely on because the brake light switch is defective or out of adjustment.

Under there dash on the clutch pedal, there is a rubber stopper that needs to be replaced. The part can be purchased from Honda for right around 3 or 4 dollars.
A bad relay switch could be the culprit if dash lights remain on after engine starts in a Toyota. Cold weather can also cause these lights to stay on after the engine starts.
Check your brake fluid, it more then likely is low. That is a good indicator when the light comes on, if its not that... you might want to check your Ebrake cable underneath the car make sure its not hung up.

What year and model? Under what conditions? The dash lights are designed to stay on in certain models. Saab 900s from about 1987 on will have dash lights come on any time the ignition switch is in the ON position, whether or not the headlight switch is turned to ON.
