SDH or Synchronous Digital Hierarchy is an ITU (International Telecommunication Union) standard which defines transportation mechanism of digital data over optical communication links. It's equivalent in USA is called SONET. SDH standard defines bit rates and frame structure to carry telecommunications data over optical fiber links. Different nodes in the network are tightly synchronized through precision standard clocks or the clocks extracted from the incoming data streams. The basic date rate for SDH is 155.52Mbps and is known as STM-1 (Synchronous Transport Module level - 1) or STM-0 (51.84Mbps).

It is an abbreviation for Synchronous Digital Hierarchy, developed after Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy(PDH). It is the technology by which Optical Fibre carries light beams between Transmission Equipment from different vendors, but still able to interface each other with perfection, adhering to international standards(e.g, ITU-T)
