In a tribal society every married man is the head of the family. Related families are considered clans. They elect a clan leader who has loyalty to the tribe. This is a blood relationship. In America the Sioux Indians were considered to be of five nations. Each nation consisted of several tribes. When the five nations rose to fight the battle where they killed Yellow Hair (Custer), they conferred with each other before they came to some kind of political agreement to fight the war.
