Usually, in a tribal society there is no national government or no loyalty to the national government. All Arab countries are tribal societies, more or less. In the 20th Century, the king of Saudi Arabia who had many wives, sought to marry the daughter of every tribal chief In his country. He did this to unify his country. In a tribal society every married man is the head of the family. Related families are considered clans. They elect a clan leader who has loyalty to the tribe. This is a blood relationship. In America the Sioux Indians were considered to be of five nations. Each nation consisted of several tribes. When the five nations rose to fight the battle where they killed Yellow Hair (Custer), they conferred with each other before they came to some kind of political agreement to fight the war.

Life in the Middle Ages was built on a kind of tribalism as a result of the Teutonic invasions.
