Platelets also called thrombocytes, are one of the constituents of blood which helps in the clot formation. Whenever there is a clot the platelets release thrombokinase(thromboplastin) which destroys heparin(anti-coagulant) and activates prothrombin which is kept inactive by heparin. The prothrombin reacts with the soluble fibrinogen in blood to from insoluble fibrin. This fibrin forms threads at the site of injury and traps WBC's and RBC's to form a clot which is dried, hardened on exposure to air. Thus a clot is formed.
