No, this is a tall tale, similar to George Washington cutting down the cherry tree.
The story goes that Abraham Lincoln was in New Orleans, when he saw a young black girl being sold. He kept bidding one dollar higher than the last bidder until he won. As soon as he won, the girl asked him what he was going to do with her. He said he was going to set her free. In disbelief, she asked him if he really meant it. He said yes, and told her she was free to go. Right away, she told him she wanted to stay with him, because he was the man that set her free.
In all reality, there are several holes in this story. For one, a newly purchased slave would not be likely to address a new master in that fashion. There is an even better chance that they would have not yet known English at all. Also, Lincoln, being savvy of his times, would have realized that if he just freed her on the street and left, she would have only fallen victim to the auction block again as soon as his back was turned.
The story isn't totally 100% without its base in fact. Lincoln (pre Civil War) was in New Orleans, and did witness a girl on the auction block. He watched shortly, and then stated he could not watch any longer. He asked his companions to leave. He stated that if he ever had a chance to hit slavery, he would hit it hard. Everything beyond that point is embellishment.

Abraham Lincoln believed that the most prominent slave holding Founding Father generation held the same view as he did with regards to slavery. Lincoln's position was that they as he did, allowed the Federal government to prevent the spread of slavery to the western territories. And that they supported the Northwest Ordinance. With that said, Lincoln believed he was in step with both the founders and the US Constitution. Of course at the time the Supreme Court disagreed with that idea.
President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the U.S., issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The Civil War was a war of contradictions. The South seceded to perpetuate slavery and instead ended up destroying it. North vowed not to interfere with slavery and won sufficient support to kill it. Unlike many abolitionists, President Lincoln understood he couldn't eliminate slavery without first saving the union. And unlike many conservative Republicans and Democrats, he realized he couldn't save the union without eliminating slavery.
