It was in the middle of the night - too late to make any difference.
After Grant's early blunder - almost letting his army be pushed into the river - a lot of other Generals tried to claim that they had rescued the situation. But Grant actually kept his nerve and rescued it himself.
The US Civil War battle of Shiloh was fought by Union and Confederate armies. The battle was fought in April of 1862. Days: 6th and 7th. At Hardin County Tennessee. Southern forces were led by Albert S. Johnston. Union forces were led by US Grant and later by General Buell. After Union reinforcements arrived, the Rebel army was forced to retreat. The battle was named after the church named Shiloh, nearby to where the Confederates first struck.
For the Union the generals were Ulysses S. Grant and Don Carlos Buell. For the Confederacy the generals were Albert Sydney Johnston and P.G.T Beauregard.
Based on the post war writings of Confederate General PT Beauregard, artillery played a major role in the Battle of Shiloh. It was vital that the Confederates create a Union surrender on the first day of the battle. If this had been the case, the nigh time arrival of Union General Don Carlos Buell and his 20,000 troop reinforcements would have caused Buell to retreat. As it happened, Beauregard wrote that the ability of the Union's artillery late on April 6, 1862 was the reason that the Federals under US Grant were able to avoid defeat. The Union's artillery batteries numbering 20 cannon provided an effective defense that prevented Beauregard to force a Union surrender.
Under the orders of Major General Henry W. Halleck, both generals US Grant and Don Carlos Buell were ordered to Pittsburg Landing in April of 1862. It was clear to Major General Halleck, who commanded Union forces in the Western Theater, that US Grant had been caught by surprise by the Rebels at Shiloh. If Buell's army did not reinforce Grant the night before the second day of battle at Shiloh, the Rebels would have been the victors there. With that said, Buell did indeed arrive in time to reinforce Grant. The now badly outnumbered Rebels were forced into retreat on day two of the battle. While "history" gives the victory to General Grant, his superior officer, General Halleck did not. He immediately left his base in St. Louis to take charge of Union forces after Shiloh. Halleck believed Grant had made a terrible error. Only when Halleck was called to Washington DC to become the new general in chief, did Grant regain his army.

to surprise Grant's Union forces and push them back to the Tennessee River before Buell could get there with reinforcements.
Don Carlos Buell led the battle of shiloh~-kcoulter
In order to provide a safe landing of Union General Buell's troops on Pittsburg Landing, two Union gunboats the USS Tyler and Lexington shelled Confederate forces. From the outset of the upcoming Battle of Shiloh, Confederate General Albert S. Johnston understood that a victory could be attained if US Grant's Army of the Tennessee could be defeated before Buell's reinforcements arrived.
Because it was the Confederates' only hope of a winning battle, before Union troops under D.C. Buell arrived to reinforce U.S. Grant.

Not quite. He told his men to rest for the night, and resume the attack in the morning, thinking that conditions were favourable. Overnight, Buell's reinforcements began to arrive at the scene, and the Union troops were able to rally in time. Historians agree that if Beauregard had continued the attack, he would have pushed Grant's army right into the Tennessee River.
