The Emperor realized that his country could be annihilated into oblivion if the Allied Forces invaded Japan. He had no idea the US had no more atomic bombs, but he did assume it.
The dropping of atomic bombs on Japan caused massive death and destruction in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and also resulted in a surrender being offered by Emperor Hirohito, bringing about an immediate end to the war.
An option was to send troops to the mainland but that option was not better than dropping the bombs.
