Smith commanded everything west of the Mississippi for the last two years of the war, and after Vicksburg fell in 1863 he was mostly cut off from the east and on his own as far as strategy and plans. A Florida Brigade, Perry's, was in "Pickett's Charge" at Gettysburg. The only sizable battle in Florida during the war was Olustee, or Ocean Pond.
