James Earl Ray was convicted of killing Martin Luther King Jr. On April 4, 1968, he shot King with a rifle at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Ray was captured in London on June 8, and confessed to the killing on March 10, 1969 (though he retracted his confession 3 days later). Ray died in prison of kidney disease and liver failure in 1998.

Conspiracy theory: It is argued that James Earl Ray killed Martin Luther King, Jr., but King's family does not believe that he killed King. Not only the King family, but also the Reverend Jesse Jackson and several other prominent black leaders believe in the government conspiracy to assassinate King and in James Earl Ray's innocence.
