But neither President Bush nor President Obama scheduled their appointments nor intervened on behalf of one particular veteran. Rather, these issues were handled on the local level; we know now they were not handled well, and that is why the head of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Eric Shinseki, was asked to resign. It is not clear yet whether all of the problems at the agency will be resolved in the near future.
