Another popular rumor, that was always good for controversy (makes for good reading and future movies/films). This was the cold war remember, and the super-powers had to be careful about any military moves that were made; additionally, North Vietnam wasn't totally cooperative with foreign powers...allies or not. They had just got rid of Japan and France, and were currently working on getting rid of the US from their territory...so adding another foreign country (like Russia or Communist China) to their list wasn't in their plans (they had a full plate).

What is known is that the US lost a lot of airmen to North Vietnam during the war, both killed and captured (POW). In the thousands, to be exact; and both Russia (Soviets) and Red China had been supplying MiG17's (J5s), 19's (J6s), and 21's to the North Viet Air Force (NVAF), as well as AAA and SAMs (Anti-Aircraft Artillery and Surface to Air Missiles). Plus NVAF airmen had been trained in both the USSR & Communist China, since 1959.

The only important modern military lesson's being drawn from the Vietnam War, that would directly impact the cold war, was the air war. The ground and riverine war taking place in S. Vietnam was, other than the helicopter, just a repeat of past wars...nothing really new to learn, or at least nothing that would influence any conventional war with the then Soviet Union (Russia).

But the air war over North Vietnam was entirely different; this war was pitting Soviet technology against American technology. And the Soviets/Red Chinese were able to observe the results of their designed or built MiG17, MiG19, Mig21 interceptors against the latest US aircraft (F100 Super Sabres, F101 Voodoos, F102 Delta Daggers, F104 Starfighters, F105 Thunderchiefs, and the mighty B52). Likewise, the Red Chinese were able to observe the results of their aircraft the J5, J6, etc. These were the Chicom (Chinese Communist) versions of the Mig17 & 19s. So it was often rumored that Soviet/Red Chinese intelligence held US POWs to gain military information.

The closest information to Soviet/Red Chinese contact with US POWs is Soviet/Communist Chinese officers interviewing captured US airmen in North Vietnam. The only confirmed info on aerial combat interviews in the Soviet Union is NVAF MiG pilots addressing Soviet officers on combat with American airmen over the skies of North Vietnam...this film has been shown on US/British television on various history/military channels. In fact, the interviewed pilot may have been Maj. Pham Tuan who claimed shooting down (denied by the USAF) the only B52 in aerial combat history, while flying his MiG21. Maj. Tuan went on to become a cosmonaut and was launched into space with his partner, Viktor Gorbatko on 23 July 1980.

Where can you find the names of people who served in the Vietnam War?

Unfortuantely you can't because at the end of the war the Vietnam Government denied there were any POWs. It was said by some that the Vietcong moved the POWs weekly from one rice patty to another. By the time the American Government withdrew their troops out of Vietnam it was difficult to get back in to find any POWs. It has been told that there were some vets who did try to find POWs (secret missions), but as I said before, the Vietcong moved any possible POWs often and none were ever found. I believe there were POWs. Marcy

Where were American gi imprisoned by Americans in Vietnam?

US POWs (Prisoners of War) consisted primarily of US Airmen, aviators belonging to the USAF and USN air units. The bulk of these airmen had been shot down over North Vietnam during the air war (over the north). Since these airmen had been downed over the north, and since the targets were in the north, the POWs were held in the North (Vietnam)...scattered through out the nation. Any enemy POW camps in South Vietnam would not have been secure, and would have ultimately been raided by the alllies.

What led up to the Vietnam war?

The Cold War. The Cold War did not necessarily involve any direct attacks, however. It was mainly between America and Russia in the 60's and 70's. Russia wanted to spread communism, but America didn't. Eventually Russia tried to spread it in Vietnam. The North Vietnamese approved, the South didn't. China was already communist, so they pitched in to help North Vietnam and Russia.

Who was the first and last POW of the Vietnam War?

The Vietnam government would have Americans believed that there were no POWs left behind, but indeed there were. Special American Missions (very risky) were sent over to free POWs, but the Vietcong moved them from one place to the other so quickly few were found and most after being tortured or starved probably died. If a few managed to survive they would have either been brain-washed or so use to the conditions in which they lived they stayed in Vietnam. There were a few POWs who made it and they had actually forgotten how to speak English. No one really knows who the last POW was. Both the American and Vietnam Governments cease to admit there are any POWs left. Marcy
