It's not so much what she said as what she did-- she was quite a role model for young women of the 1920s, an era when women's roles were changing. Ruth Bryan Owen got involved in politics after women got the right to vote: she became Florida's first woman representative in Congress, in 1929. Representative Owen also became the first woman on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. She was sometimes heard on radio, debating politics or discussing issues. And then, in 1933, she became the first woman appointed to be a U.S. ambassador to a foreign country: President Roosevelt chose her as Ambassador to Denmark and Iceland.
