It sounds like a modern U.S. presidential one dollar coin. 1881 is the year Garfield was President, though the coin itself was minted in 2011. It's worth one dollar. However if it has the word "assassinated" on it, the item could be a memorial token rather than a coin. That word doesn't appear on any of the presidential dollars, only the date that each person served as president.
