Gladiators were assigned their type depending on their weight division, and abilities. A lighter, faster gladiator might have a better chance of being a Retiarius, (fought with a net, trident and dagger) while a heavyweight would be more likely to be a Murmillo (fought with a scutum and gladius).

∙ 13y agoThe Gladiator usually did not have a choice. They were slaves that were trained by the people who owned them. This was an expensive process which is why most gladiator battles were not to the death. They would fight until someone was winning or when the crowd got bored they would bring out a criminal and slit their throat to satisfy Rome's thirst for blood.
