There is an unsubstantiated but persistent rumor that Pierce ran a woman down with his carriage while drunk. There is no existent police report , newspaper report or other historical evidence that the rumor is true. He had no reason to drive a carriage himself since he had people hired to harness and drive his carriage for him. Maybe he was riding a horse, but that too has no historical evidence to support it.

Pierce had periods when he drank enough to injure his health. He was never unable to do his work due to intoxication. I do not think there was even an instances when he appeared drunk in public and his drinking did not seriously threaten his marriage if at all.
