"Slaves never had to pay taxes because they were never given any money."

That is totally incorrect.

A 1790s U.S. Treasury Department note read: "Please pay to John Hurie the balance due for the hire of Negro Emanuel for the year 1794."

On December 2, 1863, when the "Freedom" statue was hoisted atop the dome of the U.S. Capitol, it was due to the workmanship of a slave at the Bladensburg (Maryland) Foundry, Philip Reid.

Between 1790 and 1863, artisans like Reid comprised half the workforce that built the White House and the Capitol.

Enslavers like Hurie and Reid's owner Clark Mills received $5 a week for each of their slave's labors.

Not every slave owner withheld these wages.

Also the Confederate government sought the labor of some 20,000 slaves in 1864, reserving the right to impress them (under the Impressment Act of 1863) if owners refused to hire them out. By law, the government paid the owners and provided the slaves with room and board and the opportunity to earn overtime pay for themselves.

Tax-in-kind also took 10% of a number of crops from slaves private gardens.

These are just a few examples.
