He was attacked and killed by the natives of Hawaii, 14th Feb. 1779

Further information:

James Cook was not attacked by the indigenous people of Australia (known as the Australian Aborigines) at any time. The killing by the Hawaiian natives was in response to his premature return to the islands. As the god they believed him to be, he was not supposed to return so soon, and when his crew had an altercation with the natives over a boat, Cook was killed.

Was Captain Cook a good leader?

Yes; I believe he was a good leader. He cared for his crew and always tried to do the best for them, this is one of the things that is needed to become a good captain.
