Archeologists, palientologists, and historians have discovered much evidence to show that sacrifice was a large part of Anglo-Saxon culture. The majority involved innanimate objects, but animal sacrifice was also common. This was not restricted to the Anglo-Saxons however, but was common in other Germanic religions too.

Sacrifice is believed to have been performed to honour the Gods.. either to appease, or to thank them. And it followed hand in hand with the hardest times of the agricultural year - sacrifice was always highest for example in November, before the long, cold winter, through which many of the very old, and very young community members often wouldn't last. Thus sacrifice was necessary in order to ensure that the Sun would return, make the crops grow and the humans prosper.
